2020-2025 Retrospective

Created: March 13, 2026
Last edit: March 27, 2026

I made a retrospective at the end of 2025 so I could hold my art in my hands. It was made with the idea that it could be something to show folks in person, but so far I've only made a personal physical copy. Good thing too, because there's an error in the print and I didn't choose the best paper for its size. If it was less singuarily focused I might be more tempted to show it to, say, my family.

While the zine does have its own commentary, I'm going to add more here because I am bored at work. Alt text will be added later and you will need to rotate your head/screen for some of the pages. This was not intended for a screen.

Front and back cover of the retrospective featuring one illustration from 2020 diagonally split with one from 2025.

That "not all" is a different way of saying "mostly".

Happy six years since the pandemic - I got so much done in my house when furloughed. I haven't had the chance to sit down and update those scrapbooks since then.

Fun Fact: The original 2015 sketch was inspired by the song "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis↗. Xemnas got a fur coat, Isa was in one of those colourful chunky sweaters from the 90s, and Aqua got granddad's clothes (Xehanort's Destiny Island outfit). The clothes were changed to KHX outfits and the slushies they held to bubble tea.

I looked back into my files and I first drew Isa with a pale scar in 2016. I like to think that when he's human again, there's no need to use Berserk and his scar can heal.

Morton (salt) - Norton - har har har. I carry a yellow umbrella because of a twenty year old fic↗. I don't read a lot of fanfic, but when I do, oh boy. It lingers.

I still really like these outfits I designed for Naminé and Xemnas. Naminé actually has shorts, not a skirt - I wanted her to have an element of the Land of Departure in her outfit, since technically that's her birthplace. Xemnas gets a white coat due to his Final Form and the white lab coats of Radiant Garden, but it's double-breasted like the guards' uniforms. You can't see it much here, but the red lining is zebra striped, also as a nod to his Final Form. I decided he needed a silly pattern like Lea (leopard print) and Isa (digi-camo(which I always draw based on the moon)).

Yes that's still my phone wallpaper. It's cropped so I can ignore the things that annoy me about it.

That Axel is based on Knife Cat↗ and the lighting is referenced from the Castle Oblivion basements. I did the base sketch holding my stylus between my pointer and middle finger because of the aforementioned nail gun incident.

I start all my redraws with the intention to do a straight redraw, but then I get Bored. Many times in KH the antagonists say things that make me go, "Hm, interesting that you'd say that. Let me find a mirror."

I really enjoyed making the error windows for the Grid redraw. The most obscured text in the error windows are "'No_i' is in an unknown format" and, from the Terra box, "It may have been moved or deleted."

The piece I promised my friend was inspired by the superficial similarities between the pairs depicted (the lead characters from Vassalord and Tiger & Bunny). The blonds both have annoying nicknames bestowed upon them by their other halves.

I still have the separate file with the KHX-accurate base colors for the outfits the Foretellers are wearing, but it's a bit garish. And yes I do think I'm funny for how I blocked the Master's and Luxu's faces.

More comments for each month of the KH20th Project can be found on their respective pages.

Not to toot my own horn, but I think the Chi and dandelion for XOXO is really cute and I want to use it again.

My 3DS is black, but I colored it pink here in memory of the DS I sold to buy it.

DESC HERE.

If I ever draw Ansem SoD with his shirt buttoned please know there's something wrong.

The redraw with Ephemera was part of a three panel comic and I really enjoyed seeing folks hollering in the tumblr tags about it. Same with the redraw from a few pages back with Sora and Isa. Please picture me cackling as I read them. (The other redraw on this page is from the end of BbS, but in keeping with my inability to do a straight redraw, the only thing that's the same is the bodies.)

DESC HERE.

If remember right, Band Concert Mickey is the first Mickey in color and Fantasia Mickey is the first with the flesh-toned face.

Shout-out to anyone else who spent ages fighting those watermelon Heartless in Dark Road. I've turned it one of those oversized carnival plushies for the beach trip (which I want to finish one day, but it needs to be redone from the ground up).

The bear heads were in the hairstyle slot and the faces changed based on the "color" of your hair. The pumpkin head was like this too.

DESC HERE.

How many allusions can I pack into one (er, two?) image? Xion's outfit is Pinocchio and Sora. Xigbar's is a mix of his guard uniform and Harlequin↗ with a Darkling hood. Yes, the colours↗ are deliberate.

Coloring an 11x17" piece with a teeny colored pencil brush was Not a Good Plan.

DESC HERE.

Fun Fact: In the meme file there is also a sketch of Apprentice Xehanort and Braig. You can probably guess who's where.

DESC HERE.

Hey look it's that Cruella de Vil outfit again.

If it's fancy clothes time, I WILL put Xehanort in heels. My reasons are the replicas and goat armour from the end of KH3.

DESC HERE.

Sometimes you have to immortalize a typo in the family group chat into stickers. I'm working on a repeating pattern based on these for more family nonsense.

DESC HERE.

Fun Fact: There's a white star for each character featured in the KH20th project. Have fun guessing which is who based on the outline and glow.

DESC HERE.

The bands were AFI and Paramore. Also, the shiny version of Obstagoon is the Perfect colour combo for this and one day I'd like to expand the illustration.

This mermaid AU really wants to expand in my noggin and I have the barest bones of another sketch started for it.

DESC HERE.

Fun Fact: I often take my own reference photos. For the October piece, I used my mannequin to help with hand placement. Usually I just...visualize where the other body would be and fake it.

However, for the December piece, I used CSP's 3D models instead. You can find a write-up on the process for this piece here.

DESC HERE.

For the vine piece, I experimented a bit with the shading. There's four layers at 25% multiply, blue - violet - magenta - red, top to bottom. It gave an interesting effect to an otherwise flat image.

DESC HERE.

My roommate saw me picking at the Garden of Assemblage piece one day, took a look at Isa, and said, "Disgusting, that man is Besotted." G O O D.

I was delighted by the automat↗ room in the Loki series. This piece was the first where I worked in a layer for the color zones↗ of the face in addition to my usual light blush.

DESC HERE.

Drawing vines is fun and all, but I never want to actually put forth effort to shade them. Or draw each individual part. Copy/paste, my one true companion.

Myaku-Myaku↗ is my first (and so far only) Nendoroid↗ and I love it. I plan to make more drawings based on it.

DESC HERE.

I may get annoyed enough at the September illustration to complete it in something like screentones instead of full color.
